ABOUT

Freedom Studios is based in Bradford and is led by Co-Artistic Directors Aisha Khan and Lex Chisholm. We create work for non-traditional theatre spaces, develop and support artists in the region and also run a vibrant Youth Theatre. 

Mission: We work towards the creation of Bradford as a vibrant and harmonious society by creating productions and other opportunities for people and communities to come together to experience, express and learn.  Our recent work includes the successful Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile by Lisa Holdsworth, When We Were Brother by Ben Tagoe, Ice Cream: The Opera with Skipton Camerata, #ChipShopTheMusical by Emma Hill and North Country by Tajinder Singh Hayer. 

 

Artistic Directors:

Aisha Khan

Aisha is a director and dramaturge. Directing work includes The Abyss by Ghiath Al Mhitawi (Royal Court/Edinburgh International Festival, 2019), Spirits by Gemma Bedeau and Lump by Kieran Launder (Freedom Studios), When We Were Brothers by Ben Tagoe (Freedom Studios), When I Say I Love You by Pete Bowker (SL Shorts), Beep (writer and dir, Northern Bullits).
As a writer work includes No Man’s Land, (Theater An Der Parkau, Berlin/Leeds Playhouse), The Market (Leeds Playhouse), The Johnny Eck and Dave Toole Show (co writer with Mark Catley, Slung Low, dir Alan Lane), The Bee Mask (dir Sam Wood, Northern Bullits) and Moonshed (dir, Sarah Frankcom, Royal Exchange Theatre). For BBC Radio 4 work includes Road Trip, Driftwood Heart and Paper Flowers and Durkopp Diana (dir, Alan Lane, 15 Minute Live, Slung Low). 

 

Alex Chisholm

Alex  is a director and dramaturg. Directing work includes Nine Lives by Zodwa Nyoni, Schoolboy/Lover by Richard Cameron, Dust by Kenneth Yates, Mela by Tajinder Singh Hayer, Scuffer and Sunbeam Terrace by Mark Catley, Tender Dearly and Non-Contact Time by Jodie Marshall, Huddersfield by Ugljesa Sajtinac, English version by Chris Thorpe, (Leeds Playhouse) and two radio programmes in co-production with the BBC: Night Lights and Writing the City. In January 2005 she was invited by Yugoslav Drama Theatre in Belgrade to direct the Serbian Premiere of Huddersfield. Alex is currently developing a musical with writer Zodwa Nyoni and spoken word artist Testament. Previous to her time at Freedom Studios Alex was Literary Manager at Leeds Playhouse.
